Zeeman demonstrates how you can easily upcycle

At Zeeman, we care about people, the environment and society. We believe it is important to continue reusing materials so that they are not thrown away but given a second life. That is why Zeeman is participating in a project by RethinkRebels, which is part of a larger upcycling initiative by The Circle Club. Together with ten other Dutch clothing brands and upcycle designers, Zeeman is taking on the challenge of giving discarded clothing a new lease of life. Together with brands such as Mud Jeans, Prénatal, Fabienne Chapot and Dante 6, Zeeman is demonstrating that residual materials are valuable raw materials that can be used to create something new.

In collaboration with designer Meike Nieuwenhuis (Studio Meike Nieuwenhuis), Zeeman has chosen to design a new outfit from used workwear. Meike Nieuwenhuis is a fashion and graphic designer who started her own fashion design studio in The Hague in 2022. With her generous dose of colour and fun, she creates conscious designs that focus on play, texture and pattern. Meike looks back on a wonderful collaboration: "Together with Zeeman, I explored how worn-out workwear could be given a new lease of life in designs that reflect their signature style and core values. My love for print design came together with inspiration from the old doors in their distribution centre. The collaboration also resulted in a unique product: a DIY upcycling workshop that shows how upcycling is also an invitation to actively involve the customer in the story and that upcycling is for everyone."

Zeeman's workwear was recently replaced, resulting in many worn trousers being returned. Normally, these trousers would be sent to a fibre recycler as waste material, reducing the value of the material. For this project, these trousers were used as the basis for the design of the suit.

The suit consists of a jacket and trousers, suitable for sizes 36 to 40. Meike used a total of seven pairs of trousers in the suit. This makes upcycling accessible, tangible and inspiring. It also shows that you can make something new from used materials.

The suit will be presented on 7 October during the opening show of Dutch Sustainable Fashion Week, together with the creations of the other participating brands. The designed suit will then be raffled off on Zeeman Netherlands' Instagram account.
